South Molton is a historic market town in North Devon just south east of Barnstaple and within a 30 minute drive of the North Devon Coast and Exmoor. The town has a history stretching back to Saxon times and a beautiful central Square flanked by Georgian fronted buildings. The Square is very much the town's hub space hosting many events throughout the year. Award-winning attractions include the town museum on the ground floor of the old Guildhall and Melchoir Luxury Handmade Chocolates - you can visit their shop and working chocolate factory open daily except on Sundays. Not to be missed is a visit to Quince Honey Farm where you can discover the fascinating world of bees and the whole honey production process. The Honey Farm also has a shop selling gifts and toiletries made from honey produced at the Farm.
A choice of walks and cycle routes branch out from the town centre pushing towards Exmoor and the North Devon Coast. Accommodation in the area is great value and includes a wide choice of farmhouse B&Bs and guest houses, character inns, cottages and small hotels. Take a dip in the local swimming pool or improve your rock climbing skills on the outskirts of the town. South Molton bustles on market days which include a Saturday Pannier Market and Thursday cattle market.
Horticultural fans will enjoy a visit to Castle Hill Gardens, while lovers of history can head to the South Molton Museum which contains a wide variety of exhibits and memorabilia including one of the first working fire engines in Devon. One of South Molton's most popular attractions is the Chocolate Factory, Melchior Chocolates, where you can see artisan chocolates being made and choose your own selection from the choice of delicious truffles and liqueurs in dark, milk or white chocolate.
The South Molton Vintage Rally takes place on the first weekend in June annually at nearby Coombesland Cross and another highlight event is the South Molton Olde English Fayre, which has its roots in the 12th Century and has taken place annually ever since. The event features market stalls, children's entertainment and various activities and challenges. Head off along the South Molton Heritage Trail and explore the town's history and architecture. The trail, which takes around an hour and a half, winds through the streets of South Molton offering a fascinating insight into how the town was shaped by the events of its history into the tight-knit community that exists today.
