Farmhouse B&Bs & the gentle rolling countryside around Crediton in the Heart of Devon
Crediton is a bustling market town in the heart of Devon with Saxon roots and links to the Saxon Saint Boniface. Affording easy access to the North and South Coasts, and Dartmoor and Exmoor, the town has a variety of shops, inns and restaurants, many with an emphasis on Fairtrade and local produce. Crediton Bookshop on High Street, with in-house tourist information centre, is the only independent community-owned bookshop in the Mid-Devon and Exeter area selling a wide range of books, cards and gifts. Crediton also has a reputation as an arts and crafts centre in Devon. Several acclaimed artists are resident in the area.
Discover the history of this ancient Mid-Devon market town in the Credition Museum and Heritage Centre housed in the Old Town Hall on High Street. The town together with the Crediton Inn also features along The Rail Ale Trail Tarka Line and if you're looking for that perfect wedding, event or heritage film venue in the heart of mid-Devon, the Downes Estate in the Crediton area is the perfect choice. Accommodation in the area includes some stunning beamed farmhouse B&Bs, traditional award-winning inns with rooms, beautiful barn conversions and thatched cottages all in an idyllic 'heart of Devon' rural location within easy reach of Exeter.
Markets & Events
Purchase the finest local meats, cheeses, pies, pastries and more at Crediton Farmers' Markets held on the first and third Saturday of each month in the Town Square from 10am to 1pm. Great times to visit are during the town's top two annual events, The Flower Festival in the first week of June and the Christmas Tree Festival in the first week of December. Crediton showcases the best of its local food suppliers in the annual Crediton Food Festival held across a weekend in mid-June annually.
History, Museum & Arts Centre
Crediton has a rich spiritual history linked to the Saxon Saint Boniface who was born here in 680AD. The Parish Church of the Holy Cross sits on the former site of Devon's first Saxon cathedral. Crediton was the first Bishopric in Devon. The red sandstone building standing today dates mostly from the 15th century.
The town's museum in the Old Town Hall is usually open from Easter to October and explores local history themes. Always of particular fascination to visitors is the accurate model replica of the High Street as it was before Crediton's Great Fire of 1743. Several interesting objects from local archaeological excavations are on display and a small shop sells local history guides. Theatre, film, talks and music performances are offered by the Crediton Arts Centre on East Street. Purchase tickets at the Arts Centre or the Bookshop on High Street.
