RHS Garden Rosemoor, within easy reach of Chulmleigh

Chulmleigh is a charming hilltop Saxon town in the heart of Devon, midway between Dartmoor and Exmoor. The centre is a conservation area with beautiful cob and thatch cottages, numerous listed historic buildings, a selection of shops and restaurants and three fine inns. Look out for keystones and carved heads above the doors of historic buildings, a unique feature in the town. Chulmleigh's parish church built between 1300 and 1400AD is particularly spectacular - move inside to see the breathtaking rood screen stretching the full length of the building.

Activities & Events

Annual events include Chulmleigh Fair which dates back to 1253 and takes place across the first week of the summer holiday. The town is the perfect relaxing retreat, yet within easy reach of the North and South Devon coasts, and attractions including RHS Garden Rosemoor just a short drive to the west. Pretty walks branch out from the centre, and the Tarka Trail, popular for cycling and walking, starts at nearby Eggesford Forest alongside the River Taw. A wide range of activities are available in the local area including hill walking, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding, golf or watching a cricket match on Chulmleigh cricket ground.

The town's golf course with magnificent rural views of the surrounding area is one of Devon's finest 18 hole golf courses which extends a warm welcome to the public. Fishing is also outstanding in the area. The Taw river is renowned for its year round brown trout, its Spring run salmon and its sea trout from May. Catham Lakes, Huntacott Water and the streams of the Little Dart River are all top spots for fishing around the town.
