View over Goodrington Beach

The English Riviera is home to twenty two of South Devon's finest bays and Paignton has a beautiful choice of wide sandy beaches for you to visit during your stay. Whether you plan to build sandcastles with the little ones, enjoy some watersports on the gentle waves or just relax in the sunshine in a deck chair, Paignton has a superb choice of award winning beaches to choose from. There is even one with a unique underwater nature reserve for you to explore! After a long day at the beach, return to your award winning Paignton B&B, hotel, cottage or holiday flat to recharge your batteries for the fun-filled next day.

Paignton Pier

Central beaches

Situated close to the main seafront attractions and pier, two of Paignton's main beaches are Preston Sands and Paignton Sands. Paignton Sands is a wide sandy bay ideal for family fun and Preston Sands has rock pools where you can cast a fishing net at low tide. It also has a Quality Coast award and is backed by an attractive promenade with colourful beach huts. The two beaches are divided by the famous Paignton pier which is the ideal place for purchasing refreshments, buckets, spades, fishing nets and inflatables. The beachfront is accessible at various points including a slipway and dogs are allowed except from the 1st May to 30th September.

Goodrington Beach and Broadsands

Just south of Paignton is the Blue Flag Goodrington Beach, a long stretch of sandy coastline with safe swimming conditions, rock pools and plenty of watersports to try. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing day on a pedalo or paddle boat which are available to hire. Dogs are not permitted on the south beach during summer but can be exercised on the north beach. Goodrington enjoys level access and a beach wheelchair is available for less mobile visitors. A little further down the coast is Broadsands Beach, situated between Paignton and Brixham. Particularly suitable for families, it has a large area of parkland perfect for ball games directly behind the wide sandy beach. Beach huts line the promenade and this beach also offers direct access onto the South West Coast Path.

Broadsands Beach

Hollicombe Beach and Saltern Cove

Set to the north of Paignton on the way to Torquay is Hollicombe Beach, a sunbather's paradise with plenty of distinctive red sand for making sandcastles and rock pools for the kids. The beach is accessed via Hollicombe Gardens which has a pond, attractive flowerbeds and plenty of grass for ball games away from the surf.

Paignton's final notable beach is Saltern Cove which is set just south of Goodrington Sands. Unique in Britain, the cove is one of the SSSI designated sites in the English Riviera Geopark and the nature reserve extends under the water to a depth of 376 metres. At low tide, there are plenty of rockpools to explore but please note that access to the beach is only via a set of steep steps.
Dogs are welcome throughout the year at Saltern Cove.
