West Kirby on the Wirral is famed for its unique coastal Marine Lake popular for watersports and for the beautiful offshore Hilbre Islands nature reserve. Access to the three Hilbre Islands is free and on foot via the two miles from West Kirby. The walk across to the islands takes around one hour. West Kirby's spectacular 52 acre Marine Lake is a mecca for watersports, particularly sailing and windsurfing which benefit from the full force of the Irish sea winds. Award-winning beaches are also here and the resort with its pretty promenade, great choice of restaurants and quality hotels is the perfect tranquil escape.

Go sailing or windsuring on West Kirby Marine Lake. The Wirral Sailing Centre offers a host of water sports courses and activities to all over 8 years. The lake is popular for canoeing and ideal for a children's party available from the Sailing Centre. Vast at 52 acres and with a depth of 5 feet, the salt water lake is totally enclosed and mostly non-tidal. Small private craft are allowed on with a daily, annual or seasonal lake license.

Hilbre Islands Nature Reserve

A haven for wildlife, the three tidal Hilbre Islands are a designated Local Nature Reserve situated in the Dee Estuary just off shore from West Kirby. Called Little Eye, Middle Eye and Hilbre, all three feature mudflats, sandbanks and marshes providing ample food for migratory birds. The islands and the Dee Estuary are one of Europe's most important sites for overwintering wildfowl and waders and the tidal islands are free to access and open daily from 10am to 5pm. Double check weather forecasts and tide times prior to setting off. The 2 mile walk across from West Kirby takes around one hour and you'll need to leave Hilbre at least 3 hours before high tide or earlier with younger children.

Royal Liverpool Golf Club Hoylake

Situated on the very northwestern tip of the Wirral Peninsula, the Hoylake course was specifically designed as a real golfing challenge. Constructed in 1869, Royal Liverpool is one of England's oldest seaside golf courses which today plays host to major championships including the Open. Golfers come from far and wide to play this historic coastal links - visitors are warmly welcomed with a great range of golf packages available.
