South Lake District Tourist Information

Things to do in the South Lakes

Cultural capital Kendal in the South Lakes is a lively market town famous worldwide for its Mint Cake and renowned for its fantastic specialist shops, its acclaimed arts centre The Brewery and regional Lake District museums and galleries. Lakes and Dales locations such us Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh Book Town are treasure troves for craft and specialist shopping and are great for walking holidays offering easy access into both the Lakes and Dales. Ulverston, Grange-over-Sands and the Cartmel Peninsula are top spots for local produce and specialist food, spectacular heritage estates, ancient priories and beautiful walks overlooking Morecambe Bay.

Bohemian festival and arts centre Ulverston is famously the birthplace of Stan Laurel, one half of comedy duo greats Laurel & Hardy. Visit the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston to find out more. Getting to the South Lakes

The South Lake District is incredibly accessible by road, with Kendal and the South Lakes a mere 10 minute drive from the M6, Junction 36. Kendal is also a major gateway by rail into the Lake District National Park with two stations, the town centre Kendal station and Oxenholme Lake District station on the West Coast mainline just 2 miles outside Kendal town centre. Daily rail links from Oxenholme are from Manchester Airport. Bus services are extensive across Kendal and the South Lake District.

Access by car to Grange-over-Sands, the Cartmel Peninsula and Ulverston is via the M6, exit at Junction 36 following the A590 west. The Furness railway line is also a gateway into the Lakes Peninsula by rail, stopping at Grange-over-Sands, Kents Bank, Cark & Cartmel and Ulverston. A daily rail service from Manchester Airport to Grange, Cartmel and Ulverston operates via the Furness line. South Lakes and Dales holiday bases Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh nestle conveniently just off the M6, Junction 36 east for Kirkby Lonsdale and Junction 37 east for Sedbergh.
