Favourite Lake District walks around Ambleside include the Wansfell Pike loop hike which takes in beauty spots including Stock Ghyll Force (just 10 minutes' walk from Ambleside centre), Wansfell Pike, the Troutbeck Valley and back round past Jenkin's Crag and beautiful rhododendron rich Stagshaw Gardens.

Attractions branching off from this great circular hike south of Ambleside include the National Trust farmhouse Townend and the Brockhole Visitor Centre on the shores of Lake Windermere. Pubs, inns and cafes along the route feature at Troutbeck and at the lakeside Brockhole Visitor Centre.

The scenic stroll direct from Ambleside north to William Wordworth's historic home Rydal Mount was a favourite walking route between Ambleside and Grasmere with Dorothy Wordsworth. The route stretches up through Rothay Park west of Ambleside centre then follows the path of the River Rothay via Fox How and up towards the famous Stepping Stones over the River Rothay.

Alongside Stock Ghyll Falls there are other stunning waterfalls walks west of Ambleside towards the Langdale Pikes like walking around Skelwith Bridge and Skelwith Force the stunning Dungeon Ghyll Force waterfall walk direct from the car park near the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel with on-site hikers' bar. The 516 Langdale Rambler bus services runs direct from Ambleside to the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel via Skelwith and top fishing lake Elterwater.
