The Oxenham Arms is undoubtedly of the oldest Inns in existence, this is where Charles Dickens once stayed and wrote his Pickwick Papers, Admiral Nelson stayed, The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould who wrote the hymn Onward Christian Soldiers . Charles Kingsley wrote of The Oxenham Arms in his famous novel Westward Ho .

The Oxenham Arms was the entire setting for the Author Eden Philpotts novel The Beacon . Its name is derived as it was the birthplace of Captain John Oxenham Sir Francis Drakes Ally and 1st Navigator for the English fleet and a renowned Pirate in the mid early 1500 s.

South Zeal is within the Dartmoor National Park just 5 minutes off the main A30 Dual Carriageway to Devon and Cornwall. Only 20 minutes from Exeter and 15 minutes from Chagford. Take the A382 Whiddon Down and Services junction off the A30 and through Whiddon Down over a roundabout on for half a mile. Turn immediately right when you see The brown Oxenham Arms sign or the South Zeal sign on your left. The Oxenham Arms is in the middle of the village opposite the Post Office and Stores,
