Lining the main street is a lovely selection of old stone cottages which surround the central feature of the village - a wonderful duck pond. Two excellent inns - one of which sells local produce - make up the settlement's amenities, but just three miles away is the prestigious market town of Helmsley, with its historic market square surrounded by hotels, shops and tea-rooms. The town boasts a 12th century castle whilst the English Heritage site, Rievaulx Abbey, is also close by. The outlying area is excellent walking country and ramblers can enjoy exploring the surrounding moors with their hidden dales and villages.
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.
