Nestled in the heart of the Langdales, in the picturesque Lakeland village of Elterwater, our independent hostel offers simple yet comfortable and homely accommodation, Ideally positioned for access to some of the Lake District National Parks most famous fells.
With a history of hostelling dating back to 1939, we have experience catering for groups, individuals and families with rooms for up to six people.
We also have a spacious living and dining area with free Wi-Fi access. Delicious home made meals are available or alternately there is a large self catering kitchen for your convenience.
Our variety of bunk rooms accommodate between two to six people - a great choice for groups, couples, families and individual travellers. Couples and individuals can enjoy additional privacy by booking a whole room or you can book one or more beds in our shared dorms.
Each room has full size adult bunk beds with comfortable new mattresses and pillows. There are private shower facilities and shared bathrooms throughout the hostel.
Guests have access to our self catering kitchen, equipped with all essentials including fridges, freezers, ovens and washing up areas. Free tea and coffee are provided in the kitchen for guests to enjoy at any time.
We can also arrange to cook breakfasts, dinners and put together packed lunches for you.
Relax in our homely, communal lounge and dining area, and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine while sharing stories with fellow guests, or perhaps play one of our many board games.
We also have a large drying room and secure bike storage for your use.
Elterwater is central to the Lake District National Park with access to a number of notable fells and mountain ranges – making it the perfect destination for keen walkers, runners, hikers and cyclists. Our staff can help you arrange and map out walks and hikes and have a wealth of knowledge on the local fells and lakes.
The villages of Ambleside and Grasmere are a short drive away and have a wide variety of indoor and outdoor attractions including the Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth museum.
We are also located just 500m from a one of the best traditional Lakeland pubs, The Britannia Inn, perfect for meals and a drink after a long day on the hills.
Check in is available between 5pm and 10 30pm and rooms must be vacated by 10am on the day of departure. We welcome children of all ages but regret that we are unable to accommodate pets.
Getting to Elterwater:
By Car: Junction 36 M6, then A591 from Kendal to Ambleside, A593 from Ambleside to Skelwith Bridge, then take the B53435 to Great Langdale and follow signs for Elterwater.
By Train: Windermere train station is 8 miles from Great Langdale. Catch the bus to Ambleside, then change to the 516. For the 516 timetable click here. For more information go to Transport Direct.

By Bike: National Cycle Network Regional Route 37, then links from Skelwith Bridge all the way to Elterwater. For more information go to the Sustrans website.
By Foot: The Cumbria Way runs from Ulverston to Carlisle and through the Great Langdale valley; there is also a network of footpaths that run through the valley.
Once in Elterwater, continue through the village, past the Britannia Inn on the right hand side, and past the National Trust Car Park on the left and over the bridge. At the end of the bridge, the road forks, turn left and the hostel is around 100m further down, on the right hand side.
