Located in the charming village of Newton Poppleford is the Southern Cross House and Tea Rooms. Sidmouth is only a few miles away and this acts as a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The guest house itself is a historic 18th century thatched cottage and it offers traditional bed and breakfast accommodation in a delightful atmosphere. Take a step back in time when you enter the enchanting walled country garden, here you can dine at your leisure amid the scented flowers, eucalyptus, maple and spruce.
The guest house has five cottage-style bedrooms to choose from. Three are en-suite and two share a bathroom.
Each room features a Freeview TV, complimentary beverage tray, ironing facilities and hairdryer. Reduced rates are available for single occupancy.
As you'd expect from a traditional guest house, a full English breakfast is included in your room rate and served in the elegant dining room. A continental option is also available.
Making Southern Cross unique is its low beamed tea rooms which blends rustic and stylish features. Come take a seat at the hotch-potch of antique tables and enjoy renowned cream teas, oven fresh scones, mountains of clotted cream and locally produced jams. Light lunches are also served throughout the day and a selection of homemade cakes are available. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are also offered.
All the bedrooms are on the first floor and accessed via stairs. Those with mobility impairments can use the provided handrail. As this is a historical building, bedrooms have either a step up or step down into them. Many of the rooms' floors are also uneven due to the age of the building.
The guest house is the ideal place to stay if you want to explore Devon's World Heritage coast. Sidmouth is three miles away and there are plenty of fossil hunting beaches to found at Lyme Regis and Charmouth, only 20 minutes' drive away. Nearby Exeter has a historical cathedral, a quay and a modern shopping centre. Further afield is Dartmoor and this beautiful place can be reached in only 45 minutes.
Take junction 30 of the M5 for approximately 8 miles.
Then follow the A3052 towards Sidmouth and once you reach the mini roundabout in Newton Poppleford follow the signs for Sidmouth, the guest house is 75 yards on the left after the roundabout.
