Welcome to The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale, a beautiful hotel that has been offering accommodation for the past 300 years. We have run the hotel for over 20 of those years and have worked hard to further its traditional feel by restoring it to its former glory and leaving many of its stunning original features intact. When you stay with us at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel you will be about as far removed from modern living as possible – we have no mobile phone reception and you won’t find a single television on our premises, so if you’re after a proper Lake District holiday we’re ideal. Whether you’re using us as a base for a walking holiday or just to get away from it all, you’ll love the peace and tranquillity of our hotel. Almost all of the rooms in the hotel look out onto breathtaking fell views, and we have a shared lounge area where guests can relax in front of a warming open fire and enjoy a cup of tea.
We also have a hotel dining room, and we serve breakfast between 8.30am and 9.30am, while dinner is served at 7.30pm. Young children are offered meals at a discounted price, and we have child-friendly, vegetarian and other meals for special diets available. Our Hiker’s Bar, which specialises in real ale but is also fully stocked with Scottish whisky and fine wines, is the perfect place to take some time out, and we serve a superb bar lunch every day from midday to 2pm, and dinner from 6pm until 9pm. Most of our visitors stay with us for the amazing fell walking available in the surrounding areas, although you can also go rock climbing, horse riding and mountain biking. The little Lakes town of Ambleside is just 7 miles from us, and Bowness on Windermere, Coniston, Grasmere and Hawkshead are all within 10 miles of the hotel.
We have a range of 14 bedrooms for you to choose from, and all of them have tea and coffee trays in them so you can relax with a hot brew whenever you like. All of our bedrooms have been decorated differently, and they each have an individual character with original features. Four of them are en suite, and the others share bathroom facilities. We have single rooms, double bedrooms, romantic four poster bedrooms and family rooms, with a double and twin beds in.
We allow guests to bring dogs on holiday with them, as long owners ensure that their pets are well behaved and we are informed in advance. Unfortunately, we cannot allow dogs in the dining room or lounge. If you would like to eat dinner in our dining room you will need to place a reservation before midday at reception, where you can also request packed lunches for your day ahead. We are a family friendly property and are happy for parents with young children to stay.
