Around and About

The Newlands Valley is a stunning area of the North Lakes, ideal for activity and walking breaks.  Choose from gentle strolls or more challenging walks such as Catbells, Maiden Moor and Robinson all direct from your cottage door.

The variety of local outdoor activities includes ghyll scrambling, climbing and kayaking all offered by The Newlands Adventure Centre.  Buttermere, Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater lakes are all a short drive away. Your nearest inn – The Swinside Inn – serving fine food and ales is a scenic 30 minute walk from the cottage.

Travelling from the North and the South, exit the M6 at Junction 40 – Penrith.  Follow the A66 heading west signed for Keswick and Workington.  Continue along the A66 for around 19 miles, going past Keswick and Portinscale.

When you have passed Keswick, take the first turn for Braithwaite which is signed for Lorton via Whinlatter Pass, Braithwaite and the Newlands Valley.

Carry on following the road through the village and take a left turn just after the campsite signed for the Newlands Valley.  At the end of this road take a left across the bridge signed Newlands.

Continue over a cattle grid as you come into the valley.  Follow this road for around 3 miles (ignore all turn offs).  After a hairpin bend continue along the road up the hill for around 200 yards and after passing Birkrigg Farm to your right – you will see Newlands Fell Cottage on the left.  Off road parking is just to the front of the glass panel door of the cottage.
