About The Old School House

The Old School House near Penistone sits on the north eastern edge of the Peak District National Park close to the multi-use Trans-Pennine Trail.  Perfect for couples, friends sharing or small family groups, this cosy cottage is in an elevated spot with stunning moorland views.  Sheffield and Barnsley are within a 30 minute drive and Leeds and York are under an hour's drive away.  The cottage has all you'll need for a perfect rural escape including a woodburning stove, WiFi internet access and secure bike storage. 

If you're arriving by train or bus to nearby Penistone and Glossop stations or Holmfirth bus station we'll happily pick you up and drop you back at the end of your stay.  On arrival fresh eggs, tea, coffee and farm milk are all available.  Guests can also pre-order extra farm milk, free range eggs, locally sourced bread/ rolls and delicious home-made soup for your first evening's stay - please request when booking.

Living Space

  • Sitting room with 4' double sofa bed, cosy woodburner, a TV and DVD player.
  • Fully fitted dining kitchen with a double oven, a microwave, a full-sized fridge and dishwasher, a washing machine and an undercounter freezer.

Bedrooms / Bathrooms

  • First floor double and single bedrooms.
  • Ground floor bathroom containing a bath with a shower over.
  • Bathrobes and large soft bath sheets provided.


Relax in the pretty secluded garden with a feature pond and waterfall plus a patio area with outdoor furniture.  Secure storage space for bikes and motorcycles and off road parking for 2 cars are onsite.

Other Things to Note

  • WiFi broadband internet available.
  • Games, books and a selection of local walking book guides are all provided.
  • Pick-up service for guests arriving by public transport to Glossop and Peninstone railway stations and m Holmfirth bus station.
  • Please do just ask if you would like any advice on best local places to visit or eat.
  • Coal and kindling are available for the woodburner.
  • Welcome pack of free range eggs, tea, coffee and farm milk on arrival.
  • Pre-order further supplies of free range eggs, farm milk and locally sourced bread/ rolls.
  • We'll happily supervise pre-arrival supermarket delivery so your fridge is full on arrival - just check with us on local supermarket delivery times so we can ensure we are available.


Arrival is from 4pm on your first day, and departure is by 10am.  Changeover day for weekly bookings is a Friday. 

Short breaks, minimum 3 night stays are available - Fridays to Sundays are preferred.  For other short break times, particularly during low off peak season, please call us direct to discuss and arrange.

Around and About

The spectacular Yorkshire Peaks and Pennines surround you.  The nearby Trans-Pennine Trail is popular for walking and cycling, and the cottage is ideally placed for exploring Sheffield and the South Yorkshire area.
