About The Fox & Hounds Inn

Perfect for walking and touring the North York Moors and a real romantic escape, The Fox & Hounds Inn is a former 16th Century Coaching Inn offering 4 Star en-suite accommodation in Ainthorpe near Danby.  The North York Moors visitor centre at Danby is within easy reach and we're only a short distance from Whitby and the coast.

Surrounded by spectacular National Park scenery, the inn serves a hearty range of locally sourced meals, real ales and quality wines.  Relax in front of cosy open fires during the colder months or in the beer garden on warm sunny days.  Free WiFi is available, and our other facilities include a games room with Wii games and pool table, onsite bike storage and a sauna.

Food & Drink

  • Bed and breakfast, or dinner, bed and breakfast rates are available. 
  • An optional lunch and evening dinner menu is served in the restaurant featuring delicious locally sourced, freshly prepared dishes accompanied by local real ales or a selection of fine wines.
  • Menu choice changes daily with mouthwatering Chef's Specials and traditional pub favourites available including Theakston ale pie, grilled Yorkshire gammon and Whitby scampi. 
  • A good selection of vegetarian options are served along with our popular desserts menu, tea, coffee and liqueurs.
  • Restaurant and bar opening times: daily 11am-11pm, Sundays until 10.30pm.  Lunch is served from 12 to 2.15pm, dinner from 6 to 9pm.

Choose from seven comfortable en-suite rooms, all with stunning views of the surrounding North York Moors.  Single, double, twin and family rooms (up to 4 people sharing) are available.  Each room includes:-

  • Complimentary refreshment tray with tea, coffee, fruit and herbal tea, decaffeinated coffee, milk and biscuits.

Around and About

The inn is perfectly placed for activity breaks.  Walking and cycling opportunities are direct from our door, plus we're ideally close to the free entry Moors National Park Centre, the North York Moors' flagship visitor centre near Danby.  Excellent fishing on the River Esk is also nearby (local licenses are available). 

'Heartbeat Country' around Goathland and beautiful moorland villages and market towns in and around the National Park including Kirkbymoorside, Guisborough and Pickering (where you can pick up the steam railway) are within easy reach. 

We're only a short drive or bus ride away from Whitby on the coast with its famous links to Bram Stoker's Dracula.  Whitby's range of attractions includes fine independent shops, the Captain Cook Museum and the cliff top ruins of Whitby Abbey.  The quaint Victorian seaside village of Saltburn with its historic cliff lift, pier and popular sandy surfing beach is also nearby.
